The Beauty of Artistic Connections: Welcoming Guest Artist Anna Filimonova to Sydney
The Beauty of Artistic Connections, Guest Artist
Artistic Connection
Art has an incredible way of connecting people, not just through what we create but through the relationships that form around it. For me, curating is more than just selecting artworks—it’s about discovering artists whose visions align with my love for abstract, streak, and quirky pieces that stand out from the rest. I deeply admire artists who are bold, unique, and unafraid to challenge perceptions.
That’s why I’m so thrilled to introduce Anna Filimonova’s latest collection, Chromatic Concepts, at Mira Corbova Art Gallery. Having worked together for over seven years in New Zealand, our collaboration is built on mutual respect, loyalty, and a shared passion for art that captivates and inspires. Now, as I establish my private gallery in Sydney, it’s truly special to reunite and showcase her surreal, dreamlike cityscapes alongside my own abstract work.
Why the Artist-Curator Relationship Matters
Being both an artist and a curator, I understand the dedication it takes to build a career in the art world. Just as artists rely on galleries to believe in their work, promote their creations, and provide them with opportunities, galleries depend on artists to trust the process, communicate openly, and appreciate the hard work behind the scenes.
Words from my Guest Artist Anna Filimonova
AF: I have a special connection with Mira. She invited me to exhibit in her gallery in 2018 after I won an award, and that became my professional arrival. Her encouragement and advice have given me the confidence to take my art further. She has a gift for finding talented artists, and I am just so grateful and loyal to her for the support and guidance she has given me over the years.
MC: Thank you Anna!
This is exactly the kind of beautiful, pressure-free relationship that allows both artist and curator to flourish. We learn from each other every day, growing together in ways that elevate our work and deepen our appreciation for what we do. Anna’s appreciation for our journey together means the world to me. View Anna’s works online or in our MCA Gallery in Kellyville Ridge.
Chromatic Concepts: A City Reimagined
MC: Anna, your new collection is a breathtaking exploration of urban dreamscapes, blending the familiar with the fantastical. Inspired by the cityscapes of Sydney and Auckland, she transforms iconic landmarks—such as the Sydney Opera House—into surreal visions where light and colour take on a life of their own. Your ability to capture the essence of a city while reimagining it through her unique surrealist lens is what makes her work so special.
AF: For some time, I wondered if I could present an urban scene in keeping with my approach to landscapes. My landscapes have an otherworldly feeling to them, so the challenge was how to depict a city in a way that allows the observer to see the familiar in a new light. This led to the creation of Chromatic Concepts, where cities become creatures of light, blending reality with the fantastical.
MC: Your signature clean, sharp aesthetic remains at the heart of your work, yet each collection brings new energy and meaning. The careful balance of colour, composition, and imagination makes Chromatic Concepts a truly mesmerising experience!
Anna - your artistic direction has beautifully shifted over the years—like moods or experiences—but your work remains unmistakably Anna. Many clients are fascinated by the precision and signature clean, sharp look of your surreal and fantastical pieces. What inspires these changes from collection to collection?
AF: My vision as an artist is to provide new ways for people to see and experience what we already know. The idea of capturing a view as seen through a window emerged early. I found that using rooms, doors, and windows gave me a way to say something while also giving me the freedom to shift my focus from one idea to the next without losing my visual identity.
“Colour untamed” was the theme of my early Oscillation series, but then it was captured inside the windows and doors of the Opportunities and White Rooms series. Over time, my use of windows has allowed me maximum flexibility to experiment with ideas without losing my signature style.
MC: As an artist and avid art lover, I wonder what draws you to blend fantasy with urban reality in your work, and how has that vision evolved?
AF: For some years, I’ve been pondering how to present an urban scene in line with my approach to landscapes and composition. My landscapes, in particular, have an otherworldly feeling, so the challenge was depicting a city scene in a way that allows the observer to see the familiar in a new light. In 2024, I began exploring this approach literally, aiming to portray a city as a creature of light, which led to the creation of the Chromatic Concepts series.
MC: How did the cityscapes of Sydney and Auckland influence this new body of work?
AF: As my home, the Auckland cityscape was an obvious starting point, allowing me to explore how to zoom in and give buildings their own identity within the whole. The next step was depicting Sydney, where I have fond memories of a fantastic holiday with just my sister and me a few years ago.
MC: I’m always fascinated by lush colours, they make me happy. As you know, my art is very colourful. Colour is a vibrant element in your collections, Anna. How do you decide on your palette for each series, and does it reflect specific themes or emotions?
AF: In this series, I start with the sky, mixing various colours and then stretching them down into complementary shades. I then choose an image that has the right feel to lay the silhouette of the sky on. After that, the colour of the sky seems to seep into the painting, sparking complementary and contrasting colours. It’s a mystery even to me how it works.
MC: What do you hope viewers take away from Chromatic Concepts?
AF: Surreal art is often considered a mix of fact and fantasy. Here, the mix comprises the reality of a city and fantastical depictions of it in myriad contortions of colour. I aim to challenge the viewer and tell them a visual story that resonates emotionally—a vision of the real and unreal together.
MC: Are there particular techniques or creative rituals that help you achieve the meticulous precision your work is known for?
AF: Not really. This stems from the training I received in Ukraine, which at the time seemed ridiculously pedantic. Now, I greatly appreciate the skills they taught me.
MC: As an artist, I always have a few personal favourite artworks in my collection, but I can’t keep them all. When I see a client in love with my artwork, I’m deeply moved and ready to let it go! It happened recently here in Sydney with my Grace artwork accompanied by a poem; some friends couldn’t believe I sold it. My wonderful clients were so touched, and I knew Grace belonged to them! It brings me immense joy when our art connects so profoundly with its new owners. I’m very grateful for this connection and my client’s kind words and support. Do you have a personal favourite piece in this collection, and what makes it special to you?
AF: My favourite is always the last painting I’ve completed, as it encompasses everything I’ve learned up to that point. I’m particularly pleased with Inbetween Is and Isn’t because I feel the juxtaposition of the Opera House and city towers playing against each other works very well (and the title fits nicely). The two Shine and Witness works are more conventional but posed a significant challenge. It was difficult to paint the subtlety of a night scene, and also nerve-racking, as any mistakes on the searchlights would have ruined the paintings.
MC: What advice would you share with emerging artists striving to develop a distinct and recognisable style?
AF: Don’t listen to anyone’s advice! Just be true to your own vision.
MC: Indeed! Stay true to your essence- your colours, your vision, your voice. There’s only one YOU, and that’s your greatest strength. Be YOURSELF—always!
Celebrating Trust, Creativity, and Collaboration
As an artist myself, I am grateful for every gallery that has trusted in me, nurtured my work, and given my art a platform. I know firsthand the commitment, passion, and effort it takes to support artists and share their creations with the world. This understanding makes my curatorial work even more rewarding, as I strive to do the same for the incredible artists I collaborate with.
It’s a privilege to work with artists like Anna—those who not only create outstanding art but also value and respect the relationships that make exhibitions possible. When this mutual appreciation exists, the result is something truly special and lasting.
A heartfelt Thank you to everyone who joined our latest Art Soirée where we opened the Chromatic Concepts exhibition at Mira Corbova Art Gallery. It was an absolute pleasure to share this special evening with such a fantastic crowd, engaging conversations, and wonderful feedback about my art and my guest artist Anna’s work. We look forward to welcoming you again in the future gatherings, exhibitions and creative experiences!
All works are available to view online or by private appointment. Whether in person or online, our art promises to challenge perceptions, spark emotions and celebrate the boundless creativity of abstract and surrealism.

Finding New Connections Through Art
Fantastic Framing
This week tested me.
Personally, I’m happy-ish — I have the most supportive partner, my best friend and husband, a beautiful home, and my gallery filled with artworks I’ve recreated after closing my fine art gallery in New Zealand.
But professionally? I hit a wall and found myself questioning everything.
Am I good enough? Is anyone truly interested in my work or what I have to say? Should I continue as both a gallerist and an artist? Will I ever publish my book? Would people even care enough to buy a copy?
Some might say, “Not you, Mira! You’re unstoppable!” But the truth is, I’m just human — creative, sensitive, and not immune to self-doubt. While I’ve achieved things I once thought impossible with my “I believe I can fly” attitude, this week I felt grounded. Where are my wings?!
Relocating to my fourth country has been both exhilarating and challenging. I’ve never followed the typical path of climbing the property ladder, ticking off milestones like marriage, babies, or degrees. My life has always been colourful, shaped by dreams rather than convention. But starting over — again — is hard, even in a vibrant and welcoming place like Sydney.
Building connections takes time, and as an artist, it can feel isolating. I’ve been applying for art shows and gallery opportunities, which is both exciting and nerve-wracking. The waiting feels like standing on the edge of a cliff, wondering whether the wind will lift you or leave you stranded. If you’re an artist, I’m sure you can relate!
And here’s something many people don’t realise artists often look up to gallery owners, thinking how lucky they are. I’ve heard it more than once — “You must have it all!” But oh, if only they knew what it’s really like to be a double agent, both gallerist and artist. Let’s just say it’s a story best left buried — one only experience can teach.
Then today, something changed. My phone rang.
“Hi Mira, how are you doing?” said the voice on the other end. It was Avi, the founder of Fantastic Framing, whom I’d followed since my time in New Zealand. And let me tell you, they truly live up to their name! He thanked me for my order, asked about my art, invited me to meet him, and offered to help promote me. His genuine interest reminded me that kindness and support often appear when you least expect them.
By the way, my order of seven new frames for my works arrived super quick, and I’m amazed by the quality and service!
That simple conversation reignited my hope. It reminded me of the joy I’ve always found in encouraging others — particularly artists who’ve felt lost or doubted their creativity. I used to shout from the rooftops: Don’t give up! I even ran wellness art workshops for people who longed to create but didn’t believe they could, as well as for those who felt isolated and wanted to connect but didn’t know how.
So, you cannot draw a stickman?
Funnily enough, my husband — who once said he couldn’t even draw a stickman — asked for a canvas today because he’s inspired to paint. That moment made me laugh, but it also reminded me of the transformative power of art and connection. I might have a competition at home now!
Dear Artists - Let’s Fly!
So here’s what I want to share: even when you feel like you’ve hit rock bottom, remember this — it’s the perfect place to push off and rise. There’s nowhere to go but up. So let’s fly!
If you’d like to connect, reach out. Follow me, email me, or join me for coffee. Let’s keep lifting each other through art.
Have an awesome weekend creatives!
PS Thank you Fantastic Framing for supporting artists!

Travelling Through Art: A Journey of Connection, Culture, and Creativity.
Travelling Through Art - Iran.
Happy New Year 2025, Art Lovers!
We are back from our Middle Eastern travels and what an unforgettable journey it has been!
When you travel, you don’t just visit places—you meet yourself.
You discover new facets of your being that you didn’t know existed, and you come back changed. For me, this transformation is inseparable from art and culture. Every new destination offers a fresh canvas, and every encounter is a stroke of colour, enriching my understanding of the world.
Our team has just returned from an incredible adventure. We started in Türkiye and spent the majority of our time in Iran, where I had the privilege of reuniting with my Persian family. I was immersed in the region's immense creativity and deep cultural heritage, which has always been a profound source of inspiration for me.
Art and Travel Create Experiences
Art and travel, for me, are interwoven. Together, they create experiences that are more than just memories—they are transformative. Through art, we transmit emotions and through travel, we transform our understanding of ourselves. It’s as if we’re transferring our inner essence into a wave of emotion that engages all our senses. Each journey I take—whether to a distant continent or a nearby town—makes me feel more connected to the world and, in turn, to myself. The deeper I travel into other cultures, the more I discover about human nature, and each time, I return to being a more enlightened, understanding, and appreciative person.
During my recent trip to Iran, I was struck by the richness of Persian culture. I could not wait to meet my Persian family—my in-laws and my brothers from another mother! But it wasn’t just the people who left a lasting impression; it was the places, the history, and, most importantly, the art. Every corner seemed to offer a new narrative, a new story, and I found myself profoundly moved by the beauty around me.
A Journey Through History and Art
One of the highlights of my trip (and there were many!) was finally visiting the majestic Azadi Tower in Tehran—originally named the King’s Memorial (Shahyad Tower). Commissioned to mark 2,500 years of the Persian Empire, this monumental structure beautifully encapsulates the grandeur of Persian history and culture. For years, it had been on my bucket list, and it did not disappoint. I stood there, awestruck by the sheer scale of its design, which reflects the strength and resilience of a nation.
Equally moving was my visit to the tomb of the great Persian poet Hafez, where my husband gifted me a beautiful yellow scarf inscribed with one of Hafez’s timeless poems. Standing there in the tranquil space, enveloped by the profound energy of the place, I was reminded of how art, both visual and written, serves as a bridge between the past and the present, connecting us all to our shared humanity.
Another unforgettable experience was spending over two hours at the Persepolis (the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire, c. 550-330BC) and then at the tomb of Cyrus the Great, a ruler whose legacy of peace and tolerance remains unmatched. It was deeply disappointing to see that the current regime has failed to recognise his monumental contributions to global peace. Nonetheless, visiting his tomb reminded me of the power of good leadership—something the world desperately needs today.
The Colour and Creativity of Persia
For me, art and travel equal happiness, and this trip, in particular, further fuelled my passion for exploring the intersection of creativity, culture, and human connection. The sheer vibrancy and diversity of the colours in Iran were unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. From the deep yellows of the thermeh textiles in the beautiful, historical town of Yazd to the striking Marquetry Inlay (Khatam Kari) Bowl I fell in love with in Esfahan, the country was an endless kaleidoscope of inspiration.
One of my most emotional experiences was visiting the many beautiful mosques, where I found myself moved to tears by the muezzins’ voices calling the faithful to prayer. The spiritual energy in those places was palpable, reminding me once again that the present is a true gift. If only we could all pause, breathe, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us—whether in nature, in art, or in the moments we share with others. During my recent journey through Iran, I had the privilege of experiencing some of the country’s most breathtaking and architecturally stunning mosques, each a unique testament to the artistry and cultural heritage of Islamic architecture. Three mosques, in particular, stood out in their beauty and intricate design, leaving me in awe of their symmetry and delicate craftsmanship.
The first of these was the 700-year-old Qazvin Mosque, a magnificent example of medieval Islamic architecture. This mosque, rich in history and design, is not only a treasure of Persian craftsmanship but also a remarkable masterpiece of geometric symmetry. The delicately designed domes and arches are meticulously proportioned, and the mosque’s vast courtyard and prayer hall reflect the spiritual depth of the region. The intricate tilework, with its deep blues and earth tones, evokes a sense of serenity and awe, creating an atmosphere of reverence. The mosque’s perfect symmetry, combined with its timeless beauty, speaks to a rich history, with every tile and arch seemingly telling the stories of centuries past.
Next, I visited the Pink Mosque in Shiraz, known as Nasir al-Mulk Mosque (image featured in this blog). This mosque is an absolute gem of Persian architecture, renowned for its vibrant stained-glass windows. When sunlight filters through these windows, it creates an ethereal spectacle of coloured light, casting intricate patterns across the floors and walls. The perfect symmetry of the structure, combined with the dazzling interplay of light and colour, evokes a sense of calm and spiritual transcendence. The mosque’s design is a harmonious blend of Persian and Islamic influences, with exquisite tilework, delicate floral patterns, and arches that draw the eye upwards, creating a sense of grandeur and peacefulness. The best time to visit to see the stunning kaleidoscope of colours reflecting through the windows is around 8.30-9 am (wintertime).
Lastly, the mosque in Yazd - the whole historical town and very relaxed and kind people left an indelible mark on my memory. I adore the historical town of Yazd and it should be a must-see when visiting Iran!! The desert city’s mosque stands as a testament to the art of blending architectural beauty with the challenges of the harsh desert environment. The mosque’s symmetrical design, particularly its minarets, creates a sense of balance and harmony against the arid backdrop. The use of light and shadow here is also remarkable—much like the Pink Mosque, Yazd’s mosque seems to come alive with the changing light of the day, its patterns shifting as the sun moves across the sky. The mosque’s elegance, combined with the solitude of the desert, provides a peaceful and almost meditative atmosphere.
Each of these mosques embodies not only architectural precision but also deep spiritual significance. Their symmetrical beauty and intricate designs reflect a rich cultural and religious history that continues to inspire awe in all who visit. Through these structures, Iran’s artistic and architectural heritage is not merely preserved but is celebrated as a living expression of faith and artistry.
In the end, this journey was not just one of geographical exploration, but of inner transformation. After meeting countless incredible people and hearing their stories, I felt more connected than ever before. It is through these connections that we truly begin to understand the world and our place within it.
Art as a Gateway to Connection
Art has a unique ability to bring us together, no matter where we are from or where we are going. As I reflect on my travels and the people I met along the way, I am reminded of the power of art to transcend boundaries and foster a deeper understanding of our shared humanity. It is through creativity that we can connect, heal, and grow—together.
As we begin this new year, I am excited to announce some exciting events at our gallery. We will be welcoming several new artists, including New Zealand’s renowned Anna Filimonova, whose solo exhibition, Chromatic Concepts, will open on 2nd February. Anna’s new collection of cityscapes is a beautiful fusion of vibrant colours and thought-provoking perspectives. Some of our followers may remember her surreal works from our galleries in New Zealand, and we’re thrilled to bring her latest pieces to our space.
We will also be welcoming back the famous ‘Grubbs’ figurines by Seward—a playful, colourful collection that promises to bring joy to all. These delightful pieces make perfect gifts and are now available at affordable prices.
Visit us at miracorbovaart.com If you’re in Sydney, I invite you to visit us for the opening of Anna’s exhibition or contact us for a private viewing. Art is meant to be experienced, and I look forward to connecting with you all through the power of creativity.
As we embrace the new year, let us remember to be present and to live life to the fullest. Not everyone has the luxury of choice, and we must never forget that. I pray for peace, for wise and compassionate leaders across the world, and an end to senseless wars and oppressive regimes. May we all live in freedom, harmony, and understanding.
Let’s stay connected through healing arts and the shared language of creativity.
Warm wishes for the new year,
Mira Corbova

Nourish your soul with ART
It all begins with an idea.
Art is like a box of chocolate ….
…for me! Shall I open it and indulge in a burst of colour that feeds my soul? Certainly!
That line was from an article I wrote for My Space Magazine in New Zealand a few years ago. The feature included one of my favourite (and naturally red!) artworks. The editors even loved seeing me perched on my iconic red egg chair next to it—just like that, an article was born!
In that piece, I shared three simple steps to start collecting art, a question I’m often asked:
"Mira, how do I start collecting? How do I know what art to buy?"
The advice I gave was inspired by a friend who once told me, “KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid”—though I promise, without the insult! These words came to me when I felt overwhelmed juggling multiple projects. Here’s my artful twist on KISS (which, coincidentally, is the name of the red painting I’m sitting in front of in this image):
Three Simple Steps to Begin Collecting Art
1. Make a Connection
Art is emotional, personal, and instinctive. Trust your gut. Always! When a piece grabs your attention, it’s often the one for you. I sometimes encourage my clients to step away from a piece of art and re-enter the room. If it still “grabs” them, I say, “That’s your artwork!”
True story: Once, I was wandering through a gallery in Auckland when I locked eyes with a stunning, multicoloured glass vase. I turned to my partner and said, “She’s looking at me!” He laughed, replying, “You can’t buy art every day!” But just as we reached the car, I rushed back with a big smile, telling the gallery owner, “I’ve made a connection with your little friend—I want her!” That vase now sits in my home, radiating joy and reminding me of beautiful Aotearoa, New Zealand and the memories it holds.
2. Nourish Your Soul
Don’t focus too much on the price or size—let the piece speak to you. Choose art that makes you smile and lifts your spirit. One client fell in love with a large lime-green painting of mine and was so inspired that she bought a matching sofa to complement it. She later joked she even repainted her door in the same shade! Now that’s a colour match made in heaven.
3. Colours Are Emotions
Colours have the power to transform spaces and moods. Choose hues that uplift and energise you. Sometimes placing a new piece of art inspires a small home refresh, whether it’s rearranging furniture or adding complementary accents. Art isn’t just decoration—it’s a mood, a feeling, a spark of creativity in your home. Art is love. I’m always in Loooove!
Art That Speaks to You
Starting your art collection doesn’t need to feel overwhelming—it’s a journey of personal connection and joy. Let the pieces you choose become part of your story. Remember, the right artwork will find you, just as much as you find it.
At Mira Corbova Art, every brushstroke, colour, and detail is crafted with intention, ready to connect with you. Explore my collections or attend one of my Art Soirée events, where I’ll guide you through the magic of discovering the art that resonates with your soul—whether it’s mine or one of my talented guest artists.
Happy collecting!
