Nourish your soul with ART
Art is like a box of chocolate ….
…for me! Shall I open it and indulge in a burst of colour that feeds my soul? Certainly!
That line was from an article I wrote for My Space Magazine in New Zealand a few years ago. The feature included one of my favourite (and naturally red!) artworks. The editors even loved seeing me perched on my iconic red egg chair next to it—just like that, an article was born!
In that piece, I shared three simple steps to start collecting art, a question I’m often asked:
"Mira, how do I start collecting? How do I know what art to buy?"
The advice I gave was inspired by a friend who once told me, “KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid”—though I promise, without the insult! These words came to me when I felt overwhelmed juggling multiple projects. Here’s my artful twist on KISS (which, coincidentally, is the name of the red painting I’m sitting in front of in this image):
Three Simple Steps to Begin Collecting Art
1. Make a Connection
Art is emotional, personal, and instinctive. Trust your gut. Always! When a piece grabs your attention, it’s often the one for you. I sometimes encourage my clients to step away from a piece of art and re-enter the room. If it still “grabs” them, I say, “That’s your artwork!”
True story: Once, I was wandering through a gallery in Auckland when I locked eyes with a stunning, multicoloured glass vase. I turned to my partner and said, “She’s looking at me!” He laughed, replying, “You can’t buy art every day!” But just as we reached the car, I rushed back with a big smile, telling the gallery owner, “I’ve made a connection with your little friend—I want her!” That vase now sits in my home, radiating joy and reminding me of beautiful Aotearoa, New Zealand and the memories it holds.
2. Nourish Your Soul
Don’t focus too much on the price or size—let the piece speak to you. Choose art that makes you smile and lifts your spirit. One client fell in love with a large lime-green painting of mine and was so inspired that she bought a matching sofa to complement it. She later joked she even repainted her door in the same shade! Now that’s a colour match made in heaven.
3. Colours Are Emotions
Colours have the power to transform spaces and moods. Choose hues that uplift and energise you. Sometimes placing a new piece of art inspires a small home refresh, whether it’s rearranging furniture or adding complementary accents. Art isn’t just decoration—it’s a mood, a feeling, a spark of creativity in your home. Art is love. I’m always in Loooove!
Art That Speaks to You
Starting your art collection doesn’t need to feel overwhelming—it’s a journey of personal connection and joy. Let the pieces you choose become part of your story. Remember, the right artwork will find you, just as much as you find it.
