Dark and vibrant, this close-up of Auckland is very much the city after dark. Anna takes on the difficult challenge of painting a nighttime scene by bringing forth a cavalcade of bright neon colours above the water and reflecting upon the harbour.

We see that the light is shifting and moving, whirling over the water. The buildings rising behind are full of light in the night. They step out from each other with each major building having its character, some bursting with light. The city seems to be moving and shaking itself up into the darkness.

She uses a 3:4 canvas to dive into the details of the city, giving a more in-depth view of a city as individual buildings rather than the panoramic cityscape as seen in the 1:2 ‘Outside the Real’. The normally dominant Sky Tower shrinks into the background in this view, while other building get their chance to shine.
